About Foundations II

The Foundations II course is targeted towards senior Emergency Medicine learners.   It provides a systems-based review of complex diagnoses and critical care management within the EM Model of Clinical Practice (ABEM).  Within a flipped classroom model, Learning Pathways provide content for independent study prior to 30 classroom meetings where 2 small group oral boards style cases are discussed with focused teaching points.

Foundations II Learning Pathways

Foundations Learning Pathways allow a variety of options for your independent study.  Each pathway will cover the same weekly learning topics and is intended to take 1-2hr to complete.  It is important for you to review all the assigned preparation materials prior to each Foundations Meeting.  Specific Learning Pathway assignments for each unit of Foundations II can be found by system on the Foundations main page.

Foundations II Learners may choose from 2 different Learning Pathways:

  • Text-based- mixed readings from “Critical Care Medicine”, Harwood-Nuss AND primary literature
  • Multimedia- FOAM resources with optional supplement of Hippo Videos (paid for PGY2/3/4s)

Take a moment to review the options described below.  Decide what you think will work best for you but don’t hesitate to change your approach over time.  Your Foundations Site Director should be able to help direct you towards options for accessing these resources, either through your institutional online library, provided by your residency or for purchase using CME funds.

Text-Based Pathway
This pathway is best suited to learners who want all the details in plain text.  This pathway will provide selected pages from multiple text-based resources with the goal of establishing a deeper understanding of selected critical care or advanced topics.  Reading sources will include “Critical Care Medicine: Principles of Diagnosis and Management” (Joseph Parrillo, 4th Edition), Harwood-Nuss’ Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine (6th Edition) and selected primary literature.  Your Foundations Site Director should be able to help direct you towards options for accessing these resources, either through your institutional online library, provided by your residency or for purchase using CME funds.

Multimedia Pathway
Perhaps you’ve heard of Free Open Access Medical Education or “FOAMed”.  The number of online resources available for reference and independent study of Emergency Medicine has grown exponentially in the last few years.  This pathway will be composed of open access web content and is designed to provide specifically curated, level-appropriate resources for those of you who prefer videos, podcasts and blogs to traditional text-based options.  Keep in mind, resources in this pathway often provide high yield summaries of information and may not be comprehensive.  You should plan to build on this foundation with additional reading as needed.

HippoEM videos will also be paired for each unit; however, these are not required to complete the LP assignment.  They are intended to be a supplement for those learners who enjoy and benefit from this resource.  HippoEM is a paid resource for PGY2-4 residents, although you can get a reduced rate ($189/yr) if you have an EMRA membership.  Memberships to EMRA may be provided by your residency or you may need to purchase them yourselves if you’d like to access the related resources.  You can learn more details about accessing this content at the following site.

Foundations Frameworks

Frameworks, a supplementary curriculum for Emergency Medicine Foundations, focuses on teaching organized approaches to common clinical entities.  The Frameworks curriculum aims to equip emergency medicine residents with cognitive scaffolding to efficiently work up and care for undifferentiated patients (eg “Approach to AMS”, “Approach to Stroke”, “Approach to Syncope”, etc).

Frameworks are an option part of the Foundations II course.  Regardless, we encourage you to review this content on your own and even reference them while on ED shifts.  For more information about Foundations Frameworks, and for access to all Frameworks for independent study, please review the dedicated Frameworks webpage.

Foundations II Course Schedule for Learners

Below you will find the core schedule for Foundations II.  Keep in mind, your program may be making significant changes from the standard schedule and your Foundations Site Director will provide you with a detailed schedule for your institution (dates with specific units for your site).  Note that the core schedule below includes suggested but optional Frameworks for each unit and suggested Rosh Review mini-tests for each unit (these may or may not be required by your site).
